Q&A With Erika
• Why did you write this book?
As my multiple sclerosis progresses, and I lose more of ‘me,’ I felt it’s time to share these crazy, inspiring, real, raw, stories.
• What is the book about?
The memoir is about growing into self-discovery and acceptance, while running at life with the enthusiasm and energy of a puppy chasing a ball. Meeting rock gods and movie stars, only to come away with a deep understanding of what really matters.
• What is the bigger message you’re trying to get across?
Take life and enjoy it as much as you can. You never know what’s coming.
• What's the title's significance?
I wrote under the pen name Emily Blunt since 1990. I mean for Elle, Mojo, and others. When the actress got famous, I’d have to tell editors, “Not that Emily Blunt.” The subtitle is about my unconventional family, the celebrities I met (and learned from), and being diagnosed, and navigating a progressive chronic disease.
• What was the hardest part for you to write?
The family part. Everything was so, “Don’t tell. Don’t act like you know. That never happened.” But I needed to share. Needed others to know.
• How has the book been received?
The book’s not out yet, but, so far, my advance copy readers have told me they love it.
• Do you have any advice for people struggling with what your main character has gone through?
Advice? The book shares that living with secrets isn’t always your fault. Celebrities are fun, but trying to starve yourself to be as thin, is media hype – and cruelty. Multiple sclerosis is serious. Look for real resources. Love yourself.
• Tell us about your current WIP?
I don’t have another work in progress. My dexterity is bad, and my fatigue crippling. I may write a fictional novel around my unconventional childhood. But, I’m told the legalities of that wouldn’t be great. So, maybe I'll write it for me. Publish after death.
• What’s your favorite book?
That’s tough.
But "The Goldfinch" by Donna Tartt and "The Midnight Library" by Matt Haig
are well-worn. Frequently re-read.
